Someone is quiet and we wonder what we did.Â
Someone is upset and we assume itâs our fault. Someone criticizes us, pulls away, lashes out, or simply seems âoffââand before we know it, weâve made it about us.
Did I do something wrong? Are they mad at me? Was it something I said?
For some of us, taking things personally is such a deeply ingrained habit that we hardly recognize weâre doing it.
We just feel the hurt, confusion, and self-doubt that follow.
What if you could learn to catch it when it happens?
Taking things personally is a habit. A powerful one, certainly. But it is a habit we can learn to work with. Because so much of what other people say and do comes from what is happening inside themâtheir fears, hurts, history, stress, confusion, and struggles.
When we make it about us, we lose sight of that. We get hurt. We doubt ourselves. We defend, apologize, explain, withdraw, or react. And sometimes we create a rupture over something that was never about us in the first place.
And even when it IS about us, we can learn not to take it into ourselves in the same way.
Three Things You’ll LearnÂ
This is a practical workshop. I want you to leave knowing what to do when that familiar feeling hits. You’ll learn to:
1. Recognize It
Learn to recognize when youâre taking something personallyâbefore the hurt and the story completely take over.
2. Tend to It
Learn how to tend to the very real feelings that arise without letting them convince you that your fears and assumptions are true.
3. Work with It
Iâll teach you two practical techniques you can begin using immediatelyâand continue practicing until they become strong enough to meet that old, deeply ingrained habit when you need them most.
These are skills you can practice and master over time to help you separate what you know from what you fear, see the situation more clearly, and respond with greater wisdom and compassion.
Imagine the Freedom
Imagine not having to carry every change in someone elseâs mood. Not automatically believing you caused their anger, silence, disappointment, or withdrawal. Not allowing someone elseâs words or behavior to determine what you believe about yourself. And being able to recognize when someone else is struggling without making their struggle about you.
So much of what we take personally simply isnât personal. And even when it is, we can learn how to meet it without losing ourselves in hurt, confusion, and self-doubt.
You can learn to trust your own understanding, stand confidently in who you are, and move through your life with so much more freedom.
